CANOINHAS

ABC
DATE: Wednesday, April 17, 2013
LOCATION: Canoinhas / Tres Barras

This morning we headed out to Tres Barras to visit the Mead WestVaco plant. The company was originally founded in 1942 as Rigesa and later bought out by MeadWestVaco. MWV was the first to create the flip-top cigarette packet and now makes cardboard packaging for multiple products around the world. In July 2012, MWV completed
a $500 million expansion project in Tres Barras which is projected to increase their production capacity by almost %70.

After our visit to the MWV plant, we headed to a local history museum which was housed in an old train station. The creation of the railway system in Brazil has been a very controversial part of its history. This will be explained later on in our trip through Brazil.

Upon completing our tour of the museum and eating lunch, we visited the Ervamate company. This company is responsible for producing the tea like substance that goes into the southern Brazilian drink, Chimarro. Seeing how this regional favorite substance is processed was very interesting. While touring the facility, a member from the local newspaper, asked us some questions and took photos for an article he was writing. You can visit the link below to check out the article.

An Erva Mate plant

With all the food that we've eaten on this trip our team has been constantly trying to figure out a way to get to the gym. Thankfully today with the help of some local Rotarians family members, after leaving the Erva Mate facility, we were able to visit Total Life Sports, which is owned by Marcus and Carla. All of us were welcomed with open arms, got a great workout, and toured the gym. Afterwards, we walked back about a mile to our hotel room, freshened up, and did our presentation in front of the local Rotary club.
